Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs and symptoms of an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder (OMD)?

Tongue or lip ties, tongue thrust, mouth breathing or drooling, crowded teeth or open bite, orthodontic relapse, grinding/clenching teeth, sleep apnea or snoring, bed wetting, and behavioral aggression are a few common signs of orofacial myofunctional disorders in children..

What causes an OMD?

Causes of orofacial myofunctional disorders may include: tongue or lip tie, allergies, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, excessive thumb/finger/object sucking, prolonged pacifier or bottle usage, and genetics.

What is a tongue-tie?

A string of tissue located under the tongue that restricts the tongue from functioning properly. A tongue-tie can impact breathing, feeding, swallowing, and speech. A comprehensive evaluation is necessary to determine if your child presents with a tongue-tie.

How long will my child's treatment be?

The duration of treatment is highly determined by the motivation and compliance of your child and typically lasts between 6-12 months. This time period may change due to interventions by other professionals; your child's health and safety is our greatest concern.

Where can I find more information on OMDs?

Little Arbor Speech Therapy recommends the following websites to learn more about OMDs: IAOM.com, AOMTinfo.org, and ASHA.org

Does Little Arbor Speech Therapy have a cancellation policy?

Yes. We require a 24-hour notice to cancel a therapy appointment. Cancellations made within 24 hours of an appointment will result in a $40 fee. We allow one "free pass" to each family because we understand things come up and we appreciate the time you are putting into therapy.

Does Little Arbor Speech Therapy take insurance?

Services provided by Little Arbor Speech Therapy are private pay and fees will be collected on the day of service. Documentation in the form of a superbill will be provided monthly to be submitted to insurance providers for possible reimbursement.

What questions should I ask my insurance provider prior to starting treatment?

You may consider asking your insurance company the following questions:

  • Do I have out-of-network coverage for speech therapy?

  • Is there a limited number of visits per year? If yes, are there factors that determine this number?

  • When does the insurance year start and end?

  • Is there a deductible that I have to meet before services are reimbursed?

  • Is there an individual deductible or family deductible?

  • Is preauthorization required?

    • If yes, what is the process to obtain the preauthorization when my provider is out-of-network?

  • Is a prescription or referral from a physician required?

  • Is an initial evaluation required first to allow reimbursement for services?
